Hotel Review: Don Miguel Hotel

Ronda is one of the most beautiful small cities in Spain. It usually hosts many day trippers from Malaga, Marbella, Seville since you can see almost everything in one day. But some people, like myself, want to stay a few days here and soak up the atmosphere of this town. To do so you will need to book accommodation. Here is an unbiased review of the Hotel Don Miguel in which I spent three nights.

Location

Location of the Don Miguel hotel is the greatest part of this hotel. It is located on the cliff right next to the Puente Nuevo (the most important sight in Ronda).

Around the hotel you will find lots of great tapas bars, restaurants and cafes. Many souvenir shops (and there are so many of them) are also located nearby.

Public Area

The hotel has a small foyer with one round table and a few chairs and that is pretty much all there is for public space.

There is of course a restaurant facing the bridge, so the view is amazing, but the reviews of the food were quite awful, so we didn’t even bother to try it out.

The Room

Since Puente Nuevo is the reason we wanted to visit Ronda in the first place, we were looking for a room with a view of this bridge. That is why we decided to book a room with a view at the Don Miguel hotel.

And as I mentioned this already, the location which includes a great view of Puente Nuevo is the best part of this place.

The room had a small completely barred balcony over the cliff facing the bridge. That was the first thing I noticed, and my thoughts were: ”Oh my God, this is unbelievable”. That is until I paid attention to the room itself.

The room was quite simple with two twin beds, the tiniest night tables I have ever seen, two leather armchairs, a coffee table between, and a flatscreen TV on the wall.

On Booking.com they say that Don Miguel hotel is a four star hotel. And when you read this and see the price of the room, you expect the room to have: a small fridge, a proper writing table, at least one bottle of drinking water, a kettle and some coffee sticks, a wastepaper basket and of course a NORMAL bed. All of these things were missing, including a normal bed.

Bedroom

The beds in our room looked comfortable and normal until the moment I decided to sit on one. Our beds  were actually a SEE-SAW. The beds had three pairs of bed legs. The middle pair was way longer than the front and the back pairs. So, when you sit on one side of the bed the other lifts up (and every time it makes a big noise on the floor)! If our neighbors underneath us didn’t have the same problem, they probably hated us for that noise.

Service

We arrived at Ronda at 12 PM and went to the hotel right away to leave our luggage there. At Don Miguel hotel we were told that the check in is at 3 PM, which is  a normal thing for hotels in Spain, but our room was already cleaned and we were allowed to check in right away. That was great and I put a big plus for this hotel in my head.

But that changed after I went downstairs and notified the receptionist that there is something wrong with the beds and we need help to fix it. The receptionist wrote on a piece of paper our room number and a few words and that was all he did for us the first day.

The second day we reminded the receptionist about the problem with our beds and the fact that the air-con/heater didn’t work.

We stayed 3 nights in this hotel. And just on the last day they fixed the beds (never heard why the air-con/heater wasn’t working, but I assume they had no intention to fix it).

The cleaning service at the Don Miguel hotel was decent. They cleaned daily after we left the room. The beds were made and bathrooms cleaned.

Bathroom

The bathroom at the Don Miguel hotel was spacious. The water pressure was really good and all the bathroom amenities were provided.

Bathroom

Unfortunately the water in the toilet was running constantly, so we needed to keep the door closed to not hear the noise.

Breakfast

Breakfast at the Don Miguel hotel is not included in our booking, but they do have one available. It’s standard fare of cold meats and cheeses with breads and coffee or tea. I found the price not worth it for what they offered. This was a good opportunity to explore the town while you are looking for a place to get breakfast or just morning coffee (by the way in Ronda they have a McDonalds here, but it doesn’t open until noon… so no coffee from there).

Conclusion

I absolutely loved the view that we had from our small balcony. But at the same time I think that the room we got at the Don Miguel hotel in Ronda (even with the view) was not worth its price at all.
