Jerez de la Frontera is a city that is located in the Andalusia region of Spain. Those who like to drink sherry probably know this city. Jerez is one of the three Spanish cities that form the Sherry Triangle, a place where all of the world’s authentic sherry is made. This is a very interesting place to visit if you are into taking a sherry tasting tour and experience. For those who are planning to visit this city and stay a few nights I wrote a detailed review of the Hostal Fenix in Jerez de la Frontera, where we spent a few nights.
Jerez de la Frontera is quite a small city compared to Seville or Granada (other popular Andalusian cities). Therefore you can walk around the Old Town in less than 30 minutes. Hostal Fenix is located just 5 minutes away from the center of the city, which is perfect for visiting bodegas and historical sites.
Hostal Fenix has a great common area decorated with many small details, lots of greenery, and a small charming fountain. In the morning the common area is turned into a restaurant where you are served breakfast.
Service at Hostal Fenix is great. The staff might not speak the best English, but it is not a problem. People are alway friendly and helpful here.
We actually had bad luck in Jerez and lost our keys from the room in Hostal Fenix (it happened to us for the first time). The staff was very helpful and fixed our problem right away. Most places would try to charge an insane fee for lost keys, but Hostal Fenix just charged 5 Euros, and the receptionist went right to a locksmith.
The cleaning service was alway good as well. Every day our room was cleaned and bed made, so no complaints on that part.
Hostal Fenix has many rooms, most of them private rooms with private bathrooms (that is why I don’t know why they call themselves a hostel).
We got a room on the first floor, next to the front door, facing the street. The room itself was quite big with a queen bed, two nightstands, TV, small fridge and a table. In our room we also had an air conditioner and I have to mention that everything worked just fine.
The room at Hostal Fenix was quite comfortable, except two things: apparently previous guests smoked in this room, since it stank a lot and the first night I could not sleep because of that; second is the poor soundproofing, we could hear everything what was going on in the hostel and on the street. Luckily it was on a small one way street in a quiet residential neighborhood so there really wasn’t much noise after dark.
Our bathroom at Hostal Fenix was huge, twice bigger than in any other hotel/hostel we stayed in Spain. We also were provided with shower amenities and a blowdryer.
The minus of this bathroom was a hot water supply. A few times we had a situation when the hot water just suddenly finished and we needed to wash out shampoo with icy cold water. This is especially unpleasant when it is cold outside (in November).
Hostal Fenix included breakfast, so every morning we were served toasted bread with butter and jam along with coffee and juice. It might sound a bit surprising for those of you who usually have eggs or porridge for breakfast, but in Andalusia aaa\toasted bread with butter is a standard breakfast.
Overall I really enjoyed our stay at Hostal Fenix. The location is perfect if you want to visit bodegas in Jerez and explore tourists’ sites.
The price compared to other hotels/hostels is very good for what you get (private room + private bathroom + breakfast + great location).
There are of course some inconveniences like soundproofing and hot water, but overall I would highly recommend this place.
