There are a lot of places in the world that you can travel to, have a great time, and not spend your whole fortune. And although Europe is considered to be quite an expensive place to travel (it’s true if we talk about Iceland, Norway, GB, and a few others), there are a few European countries that are great to visit on a small budget.
Ukraine is a country that is located in Eastern Europe. It is known to be an underrated tourist destination with a lot to offer and quite low prices for everything.
Ukraine has a bit of everything for any type of tourist. There are:
Carpathian mountains for those who are into hiking and nature;
Black and Azov seas for beach lovers (it is best to go to Odesa if you are looking for fancy beach clubs and trendy restaurants. For those who want to hide from busy cities, Dzharylhach island is the best choice);
Old European cities with great architecture, narrow cobblestone streets, and romantic cafes like Lviv, Chernivtsi, or Odesa.
Living in Ukraine is quite affordable for every tourist. You can find great accommodation for a small price, and a meal at a FANCY restaurant for two with alcohol usually would not go over $50.
North Macedonia is yet another country that is not in the EU which is an amazing place to travel to, especially if you are on a budget.
You can rent a car and drive around the hills of North Macedonia, or take public transportation, either way you won’t spend much.
Accommodation and food are very affordable in this country. In Skopje we usually rent a good hotel in the center of the city with breakfast included for about $30 a night.
The dinner bill for two with alcohol is usually around $20 – $40 depending on how fancy (or touristy) the place is.
Overall in North Macedonia you would never feel like you’re wasting your money.
There are two cities that I strongly recommend to visit in North Macedonia: the capital – Skopje, and Ohrid – a hidden gem of Europe, and an amazing place to visit.
Bosnia & Herzegovina is another underrated tourist destination. Perhaps this is due to their fairly recent war. However the war is now over, and the country is quite safe for tourists.
Bosnia & Herzegovina is quite an amazing place that was a big surprise to me. The architecture, the food, and the people are amazing here. Everyone is very welcoming and friendly. The food is delicious and super affordable. The architecture tells a long story of this country and its people.
Besides Sarajevo (the capital of Bosnia & Herzegovina) you should also visit Mostar, one of the most beautiful towns in Bosnia & Herzegovina, if not Europe as a whole.
Romania is a country that is located in southeastern Europe and is known for its deep forests, tall Carpathian mountains, and famous Dracula.
There are a lot of beautiful cities that you can visit starting with Bucharest, which is a nice and very affordable place to spend a few days. You can explore the old town, visit the biggest parliament building you’ve ever seen, and eat at the oldest and the most famous restaurant in Bucharest (the low prices will blow your mind).
Of course, don’t forget to visit the famous Bran castle (Dracula’s castle in the legend) and drive through the beautiful Carpathian mountains.
If you are coming in winter, you might want to visit one of the ski resorts and have a bit of an active vacation. It is definitely going to be way cheaper in Romania than in France, Italy, or Switzerland.
Turkey is an amazing tourist destination that you can definitely visit on a budget and see some pretty amazing things. This is one of the countries that I can talk about for hours. There is just so much to see and do here, and everything is very affordable.
You can start with Istanbul and its many historical landmarks that every person should see at least once in a lifetime.
Then move to the middle of the country and visit fantastic Cappadocia. The natural landscape will blow your mind. Everything is amazing about this place: accommodations, food, people, and low prices. Of course, you can stay at a super fancy/expensive hotel, but it is not necessary, since there are a lot of great options for very affordable prices.
After Cappadocia you should move to the South, and travel around the coast. There you can visit some pretty amazing places like the ancient city of Ephesus, beautiful fishing village of Kas, warm pools in Pamukkale, and many other amazing locations.
Lviv is famous for its culinary scene. Many famous Ukrainian chefs work in this city…
